Anorexia therapyAnorexia

Anorexia – Full name anorexia nervosa, is one type of eating disorder. More importantly, it is also a psychological disorder. Anorexia is a condition that goes far beyond mere concern for one’s own weight. A person with anorexia often initially begins dieting to lose weight. Over time, the weight loss becomes a sign of mastery and control. The drive to become thinner is actually secondary to concerns about control relating to one's body.

Anorexia

The individual continues the on-going cycle of restrictive eating, often accompanied by other behaviours such as excessive exercising or the overuse of diet pills to induce loss of appetite and/or laxatives, or enemas in order to reduce body weight, often to a point close to starvation in order to feel a sense of control over his or her body.

Approximately 95% of those affected by anorexia are female, most often teenage girls, but males can develop the disorder as well. While anorexia typically begins to manifest itself during early adolescence, it is also seen in young children and adults.

There are a number of factors that can predispose a person to developing anorexia. They include genetic predisposition, low self-esteem, poor body image, early problems with feeding, communication problems within the family, in particular if there is a disconnect in the relationship with the “primary care-giver” i.e., parent, grand-parent, adoptive parent.

A person with anorexia is likely to behave in an obsessive, compulsive or addictive manner at times. It may begin with being obsessively neat, tidy, clean and punctual and turn into obsessive behaviour around food.
